John Wagner, Hallmark artist since 1970, says Maxine was inspired by his mother, his maiden aunts and his grandmother, the woman who bought him art lessons when 'fill in the pumpkins' was about the extent of his art classes at St. John's Catholic School in Leonia
N.J.

John remembers doodling as a preschooler and says both his grandmother and his mother encouraged his artistic interests. He eventually attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and landed at Hallmark as part of a new artists group. But it was the birth of the humorous Shoebox Greetings (a tiny little division of Hallmark) in 1986 that added a new dimension to John's professional life. The Shoebox way of seeing the world unleashed his talents and he created Maxine.

'Cartoonists are sensitive to the insanities of the world; we just try to humanize them,' John says. 'If Maxine can get a laugh out of someone who feels lonely or someone who is getting older and hates the thought of another birthday, or if she can make someone chuckle about stressful interpersonal relationships, then I'm happy. Putting a smile on someone's face is what it's all about.'

Those smiles have led to Maxine's becoming a bit of a celebrity. She (and John) have been the subject of media stories, including People, USA Today, Good Morning America, The Wall Street Journal, St. Petersburg (FL) Times, and Las Vegas Journal-Review, and they have been included in a major Associated Press story. Collector and trade publications have reported fans nationwide are collecting
Maxine items. Letters from consumers and fans to John and Maxine reveal a very personal connection to Maxine.

Many people say they are just like her.

Why the name 'Maxine'? 'People at Shoebox started referring to the character as 'John Wagner's old lady,' and I knew that would get me into trouble with my wife,' John says. The Shoebox team had a contest among themselves to name the character and three of the approximately 30 entries suggested 'Maxine'. John says the name is perfect.

John, who says he's humbled by such acceptance of Maxine, admits he's proud of her.

I admit, I was very busy until a few weeks ago, when my local hockey team ended our season and I was going to as many games as possible and then got alittle down, but I always checked in.

Hey everybody, so what's happening with you?

I have been alittle busy myself and have not been around as much as I'd like. Sometimes after work, I just don't have time to post at all my fav blogs and then I also go to our hockey games and we are now in the playoffs and I have done acouple of road trips, which were very exciting!! Now just waiting to see who we plat next, hoping for it to be in Illinois for more possible road trips and then maybe even more in the next rounds, that is of course "when" we advance.........can you tell that I love my hockey team, esp this yr!!!!! ;-)
I wish that they go all the way and win the championship. They did it a few yrs ago and they are good enough to bo it this yr, if everything works in their favor.

So...........help me cheer them on. The little things to make me happy. :-)

I haven't smelled all the flowers yet.

There are too many books I haven't read.

There are more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead.

There are many malls I haven't shopped.

I've not laughed at all the jokes.

I've missed a lot of Broadway hits and potato chips and cokes.

I want to wade again in water and feel ocean spray on my face.

I want to sit in a country church once more and thank God for His grace

I want peanut butter every day spread on my morning toast.

I want un-timed long distance calls to the folks I love the most.

I haven't cried at all the movies yet, or walked in the morning rain.

I need to feel wind in my hair.

I want to fall in love again.

So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having dinner, then should I die before night fall, I'd say I died a winner, because I missed out on nothing.
I filled my heart's desire. I had that final chocolate mousse before my life expired.

Live well, love much & laugh often - Be happy.

Be mindful that happiness isn't based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people we love and respect.

Remember that while money talks, CHOCOLATE SINGS!

I was out in my front yard this morning doing a general clean - up preparing for spring.
We have had a couple of beautiful spring days and I have to get out there before it gets so hot I can't breathe.

A young boy and his grandmother went by - him on a tricycle and her walking behind him.
I will never understand why people think the street is a playground but it gets stranger.........
The boy stopped peddling his tricycle and asked his grandmother TO PUSH HIM ????

Have children changed this much?
Is this the norm for today ??

I could not believe it. I and my friends at that age wanted and craved the independence of going out on our own.

Granted that was a million years ago but still...........I am disheartened.

Much to her credit, his Grandmother refused to push him.

Isak Dinesen was the pen name of Karen Blixen, the Danish author famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film of her best-selling memoir, Out of Africa. She was born near Copenhagen in 1885. In 1914, she and her new husband moved to Kenya to run a coffee plantation. She stayed on after divorcing her husband ten years later, living an unusually independent life. Her book of stories, Seven Gothic Tales, sold well, but Out of Africa made her a worldwide success. She died in 1962.

This post comes with a story..............about around and only days before Christmas, I received a bunch of visits from Classmates.com from a man that was a senior when I was a freshman in High School in a very very small farming community in Western Kansas. He now lives in LasVegas and has not really communicated with me once I accepted his friendship at Classmates.com except for sending me numerous emails daily that are forwarded material (YES HE SENT THE MURAL) SO I have no idea what is going on with him. He asked me to put up a current picture which I am NOT GOING TO DO until I lose a million pounds. Why is a picture so important to men ?????????????????????? I have to dig out my yearbook picture to post as it is and I don't even have any idea where it is. (garage)
I do not remember him except for his name and his yearbook picture which he has on his profile along with his "NOW" picture.
THIS IS CRAZY YES ???

Help me out here - what is next here ??
I am very intrigued and interested (to say the least)

1. We are both in our sixties.
2. WHAT DOES HE WANT ? It would appear that he is waiting for my current picture?
3. I was hot in High School but studious and shy

NO !!! That's my answer !!! As long as it is hard and he knows what to do with it, SIZE is not an issue with me !

Wow I have a lot to say today !
I was going to work out in my garden today and it is RAINING !!!!!!!!
That's what I get for not going out yesterday. Lowes has pansies at half price and I got some great buys - have them all on my front porch in hanging baskets and flats for planting outside. I love their little smiling faces and they smell so good !!!
For sure they are my favorite flower for this time of the year - do you have a favorite flower ?

NYC.

The client allowed the women of this
company a free hand in all design aspects.
The client was a company that was also
run by all women execs.............

The result.... well.... we all know that
men never talk, never look at each other....
and never laugh much in the restroom....
The men's room is a serious and quiet place...
But now...with the addition of one mural

Wow, Christmas went fast and our weather is strange.

Wow, Christmas went fast once it was upon us. Spent part fo the day with my daughter and grandkids, have alot of fun watching their faces light up, means more to me then alot of people know. My daughter surprised me with a few very special gifts, she knows what I like with out saying what I would like, esp since I rarely know what I might like to get, lol. Today I'm making my holiday meal, growing up, Thanksgiving meal and Christmas was the same thing and I love turkey, even though I can have it other times, means more during the holidays.

And after the past few weeks we have had so much snow, then today it reaches 50 degress and is raining and very very foggy, so alot is melting, now hopefully no major flooding to come. I will expect it to return to winter very soon and bring more snow. But at least we had a beautiful white Christmas.

Well, we got more snow yesterday 12/19/08 which closed most of the city. We have had snow almost every other day last week and my area received 11 inches today. These pics are my front, driveway, and my poor little dog who is about buried in snow. Luckily my work closed too, after seeing all the white stuff when I woke up, I knew that there was NO way I was getting out of my driveway, it was up to my knees!! They didn't even plow our street til late about 6:00 pm. And when the city plows clean the streets, it buries the end on my driveway again, so I have to dig out each time. And we are expecting more snow this weekend, I love Wisconsin and snow, but this is ENOUGH already!!!So, does anyone want some free snow? :)

Girls are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree. The guys don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead, they just settle for the rotten apples from the ground that aren't as good, but easy. So the apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they're amazing. They just have to wait for the right guy to come along, the one who's brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

Man, I have been at it this morning trying to research high and low what to do financially immediately and how to plan for such an uncertain future.
Now that we are stuck with the bailout, I would like to ask for comments today on how you think the bailout will affect you and your current lifestyle.
It is the hot topic on everyone's mind.

I for one am going outside to play in my garden since I have been glued to my tv for the past two weeks straight. Past time for some fresh air and sunshine. I will check back periodically and hope to have a good chat maybe tonight with those of you that emailed that you work during the week.

Well, first and foremost, I'd like to say hello to our guest author Sandy Ellen Patsy who has written the much talked about "Power of Pussy"! It's the story of a woman who let us all read about her steamy relationship without holding anything back!

Princess - Welcome Sandy and I hope you are having a wonderful day thus far. As you know, we're here to talk about your book, the "Power of Pussy". Why don't you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

Sandy - Thank you for the warm welcome and I really love the blog!

Princess - Awe...that was quite sweet of you to say, but let's not keep your fans waiting! How about just a *little* bit of Sandy Ellen Patsy?

Sandy - Well, the "Power of Pussy" is my debut book. The first book I've ever written. My fans like you are what keep my book doing well! I'd like to thank you all for that and if you haven't given it a try, please don't let the title scare you off! I heard it has been, it's very tastefully done and full of juicy information and secrets all women should know!

Princess - Sandy, I have to agree with you, I have heard from a few women that they were reluctant to read your book, but after reading it and loving it, I have to say that it is tastefully done and it's all about a relationship between two people and what happens when reality gets in the way! Anything else we should know?

Sandy - Oh yes, I have written many commercials and there's the fact over 30 years of selling TV Network-affiliated air time.....wait, some of those might have seemed just SLIGHTLY exaggerated! LOL

Princess - *giggling* What are the characters like in your book?

Sandy - Well the characters in the book are myself and a man that I love in an unworkable, ridiculous relationship. If I had my choice, I would wish my character was fictional and have sworn to never be one of those people again. Now I've changed. What I held to be true in my first book will be refuted in my second. Yes, this means a sequel! I've been working on my personality!

Princess - WOW Sandy, a sequel! You sound MUCH different than you did in your book and I believe that you have been working on your personality! You sound much more confident! Who would you say influences you on a typical writing day?

Sandy - Hmm...this is a really good one! I'd say what influences me on a typical writing day is a event or an idea spawned from every day life... like for example, here's a good one: Last night on National Geographic, I watched the 911 special. I am still floored at the incredible ignorance of the FBI and CIA. I don't care, they can come and arrest me! What I had missed on my first viewing was what I feel is the strongest motivation of all; Pussy! The promise of sex with 72 virgins made me come out of my chair. Don't worry, that will be expounded upon in my next book!

Princess - That sounds interesting and I guess I'll have to wait just like everyone else to see what's going to happen! Was that a little teaser? (LOL)

Sandy - LOL! Yes, I believe it was!!

Princess - Alright Sandy, before saying goodbye to you for now, I have just one last question. I'd like to thank you for stopping by and I hope you have had as much fun as I have. When you get writer's block, what do you do to get rid of it?

Sandy - And before I answer this, I would like to say that yes, I've had a blast and I hope to be back with my next book! As for your last question, I don't get writer's block. If I don't have an idea, I don't write. If I'm trying to come with an idea, it sounds stale and contrived. I have to embrace what I'm writing.

Definitely Worth a Second or Third Read

I have been promising a review for the last few weeks and here it is.

"When I first picked up this book, I was a bit skepical. Most of the books I read are at least a few hundred pages, but I promised to read it so open it, I did. What I found was the craziest and funniest story I have ever read. Though most men wouldn't find it as amusing as us women, the advice and knowledge Sandy passes on to us makes us nod our heads in agreement or just huff and say 'yup, that is definitely the honest to God truth.' By the end, I was agreeing that sometimes the black widow and the preying mantis have it right. The sex is definitely good, but afterwards, you just want to bite off their heads.'I would recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor and, well, a pussy. LOL!!"
